Did you know that your level of health is directly related to the health of your gut?

Actually, I would be confident in saying that your health starts with your digestion and your gut health.

How many times has your entire day felt like it needed to be shut down because of a digestive issue? Seriously, from my experience, digestive aches and pains stops me in my tracks and can make me cranky and pretty irritable!

But why is this?

Why is your gut health so important to your overall health and why can digestive woes change your mood in a matter of seconds?

Leaky gut syndrome. 


Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, says “All disease begins in the gut.” And, with further research, we are seeing more and more evidence of this.

“Leaky Gut Syndrome” is a condition that relates to an intestinal (gut-lining) permeability. Your gut lining is like the net that catches all the bad stuff and lets all the good stuff go through. When your net gets a hole in it, what happens?

When the digestive tract gets damaged, proteins (like gluten), bad bacteria, and undigested particles pass into your blood stream.

These particles cause systemic inflammation and an immune reaction over time. 

With leaky gut, the holes in your net can continue to widen and as this happens, the undigested food particles that are supposed to be kept out can now pass through into your bloodstream and then circulate throughout the body. Then something disastrous happens- your body will begin to recognize certain foods as toxic and will facilitate an immune reaction whenever you eat the food.  If this problem continues, leaky gut can then progress to autoimmune disease.

As our stress levels increase and we eat more franken-foods, evidence of leaky gut and “unexplainable diseases” are becoming more and more frequent. Many don’t even realize that they are suffering from leaky gut syndrome in the first place!

What are the signs and symptoms that you may be suffering from leaky gut?

Research and studies are showing more and more potential connections between gut health and these following signs and symptoms. If you suffer from any of these, it may be wise to do some further research on your specific issue and/or try a leaky gut diet to help heal your gut lining (and allow you to see if you notice any differences in how you feel).

  1. Food sensitivities (With so many toxins entering the bloodstream, people with leaky gut are producing an increased number of antibodies, making their bodies more susceptible to antigens in certain foods- especially gluten and dairy)
  2. Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  3. Autoimmune diseases
  4. Thyroid problems (especially Hashimoto’s)
  5. Malabsorption of nutrients
  6. Inflammatory skin conditions (i.e. acne, eczema)
  7. Mood swings, imbalances, and autism
  8. Chronic bloating and gas

There are many things you can do to help to heal a leaky gut, but you have to be consistent with it for you to notice results. To get the best results, consistently, you should–

  • Eat foods that support and heal the gut lining
  • Eliminate foods that damage the gut lining
  • Balance out stressors that enter your body
  • Use supplements to support the digestive process
